Metal roofing has gained popularity in recent years for its durability, energy efficiency, and sleek appearance. But despite its growing use, there are still many myths and misconceptions that cause homeowners to shy away from this long-lasting option.

If you’re on the fence about installing a metal roof, it’s time to separate fact from fiction.

For over a decade, Rescue My Roof has been a leading educator in the roofing industry. We’ve helped thousands of Wisconsin homeowners achieve their dream roofing solutions. Now, we’re here to help you, too.

Though we don’t currently offer metal roofing, in this article, we’ll use our expertise to bust the most common metal roofing myths once and for all. Ultimately, you’ll know fact from fiction, and whether or not metal roofing is right for you.

Myth #1: Metal Roofs Are Noisy

Truth:
Many people imagine a deafening roar every time it rains on a metal roof. In reality, when properly installed with solid sheathing and insulation, metal roofs are no noisier than asphalt shingles. In fact, they can be quieter, thanks to the underlayment layers that absorb sound.

Myth #2: Metal Roofs Attract Lightning

Truth:
Metal conducts electricity—but that doesn’t mean it attracts lightning.

A metal roof is no more likely to be struck than any other roofing material. Even better, if your home is struck, a metal roof helps dissipate the energy and is non-combustible, reducing your risk of fire.

Myth #3: Metal Roofs Rust

Truth:
Today’s metal roofs are designed to withstand the elements. They are coated with rust-resistant finishes like galvanized zinc or aluminum-zinc alloys and painted with high-performance finishes to protect against corrosion, even in coastal or snowy climates.

Myth #4: Metal Roofs Make Your Home Hotter

Truth:
This one’s completely false. Metal roofs are highly reflective and can reduce heat absorption by reflecting UV rays. Many metal roofing systems even qualify as “cool roofs,” helping to lower indoor temperatures and energy bills—especially in warmer climates.

Myth #5: Metal Roofs Are Too Heavy

Truth:
Metal roofing is actually lighter than traditional asphalt shingles, concrete tile, or slate. It puts less stress on your home’s structure and can often be installed over an existing roof, reducing labor and disposal costs.

Myth #6: You Can’t Walk on a Metal Roof

Truth:
While you need to be careful (as you would with any roof), metal roofs can be walked on. You just need to follow proper precautions and wear the right footwear. Roofing professionals are trained to move safely on metal surfaces during inspections or repairs.

Myth #7: Metal Roofs Look Industrial or Ugly

Truth:
Modern metal roofing comes in a wide variety of styles, colors, and textures. From sleek standing seam panels to metal shingles that mimic wood or slate, there’s a look to match any architectural style—far from the old “barn roof” stereotype.
